Becoming Us Robin Jones Gunn -Haven Makers Series #1

Description:

From the author of the best-selling Christy Miller and Sisterchicks series comes a refreshing novel that celebrates the gift of friendship.

Five young women, including beloved Gunn characters Christy Miller and Sierra Jensen, gather for a simple Christmas party and soon become unlikely best friends. Told from the viewpoint of Emily, a timid young mom going through a difficult season of life, the regular gatherings provide the much needed community she's longed for. As the women begin sharing their life stories in Becoming Us they are endeared to each other and find ways to challenge, encourage, and help each other become the nurturing mothers they wished they'd had when they were growing up. They see themselves as Haven Makers and unite to be remembered for what they do and not for what was done to them.

My thoughts on the book:

This book is from a first person point of view, that being said I am usually not a fan with this book the author did a really good job and not making the reader feel like you are missing anything. This story is in no way a love story. In a world where women can come off caddy and not welcoming, the author captured five women in different walks of life and has them come together to bond and find a way of lifting each other up and being there for each other no matter what one is facing. I loved that about this book and how uplifting it was to me as a reader. The struggles that Emily and her family faced felt like really anyone could face and it was how they handled it that gave hope. I really liked how the author draws you in and makes you feel like you are catching up with friends and less about reading a book. This book is a good clean read but does deal with adult situations.

Kissing Father Christmas Robin Jones Gunn

Description:
Bestselling and award-winning author Robin Jones Gunn returns to the cozy English village of Carlton Heath, with a winter romance to melt your heart.

A year-and-a-half ago, Anna flew from Minnesota to Carlton Heath to attend the wedding of her cousin, Ian, to an American woman named Miranda. The beautiful event ended with Anna receiving an unexpected, unforgettable kiss from groomsman Peter. Now Anna is delighted to be invited back for Christmas with her family, dreams of romance dancing in her head. But when she finally sees him again, Peter insists his only interest in Anna is as a friend. Anna is hurt, and becomes even more confused when Peter takes her on a romantic tour of London. Is Anna's heart misleading her, or is there a reason Peter is denying what he feels?

My thoughts on the book:

Anna flew to her cousins wedding and is back for Christmas. She is also back with Fairy Tales in her mind and in her heart. She is there to find out more about her family and more about Peter. While Peter has other plans she knows friendship is important and is ready to leave after Christmas with knowing her family a little more and making some friends who she will hold near and dear to her heart. Will she be able to leave with her heart still intact or will her fairy tale wishes get in the way?
I truly loved this book. I flew right through it and I was so sad to see it end, only because I have love these fun stories and characters. I loved how the focus in the book was about grace and forgiveness. I really enjoyed that even though in some cases Anna may have felt knocked down she still showed faith and grace to those around her. I can't say anything bad about this book if you are looking for a book that ties whats most important in life and at Christmas then this is the book for you. This book will not disappoint at all and I am so glad to have found it. This book is in a first person format which I do not usually like, however Robin had a way of allowing the reader not to miss or feel like your missing anything.

Finding Father Christmas & Engaging Father Christmas by Robin Jones Gunn

Description:

By beloved author Robin Jones Gunn, two timeless, heartwarming Christmas novellas bound together for the first time in an omnibus edition.

In FINDING FATHER CHRISTMAS, Miranda Carson's search for her father leads her unexpectedly to London with only a few feeble clues as to who he might be. Immediately welcomed into a family that doesn't recognize her, and whom she's quickly coming to love, she faces a terrible decision. Should she reveal her true identity and destroy their idyllic image of her father? Or should she carry the truth home with her to San Francisco and remain alone in this world? Whatever choice she makes during this London Christmas will forever change the future for both herself and the family she can't bear to leave.

In ENGAGING FATHER CHRISTMAS Miranda Carson can't wait to return to England for Christmas and to be with her boyfriend, Ian. She has spent a lifetime yearning for a place to call home, and she's sure Carlton Heath will be it, especially when a hinted-at engagement ring slips into the conversation. But Miranda's high hopes for a jolly Christmas with the small circle of people she has come to love are toppled when Ian's father is hospitalized and the matriarch of the Whitcombe family withholds her blessing from Miranda. Questions run rampant in Miranda's mind about whether she really belongs in this cheery corner of the world. Then, when her true identity threatens all her relationships in unanticipated ways, Miranda is certain all is lost. And yet . . . maybe Father Christmas has special gifts in store for her after all.

My thoughts on the book:

With no family to speak of and only on a whim Miranda took off to hopefully find the father he mom always kept a secret. When Miranda hits a dead end and shoes the picture to the shop keeper things seem to take a life of its own. Will Miranda be able to uncover the secret father she has longed for?
I really loved this short story, I honestly wasn't sure what to expect, I have read other books by Robin but this seemed to have a different feel to it. I want to say that it was like a twist on the Christmas classic Charles Dickens' Scrooge, but that doesn't seem right. The storyline is well put together and while I am usually not a fan of the first person story this fits this perfectly and I could not have imagined reading it any other way.

Miranda is back in England for her third visit and she hope this time will go just as good if not better as the last two. There still seems to be a disconnect that she would like to heal with her brother. Secrets have a way of coming out and this one she would like to keep close to her heart so not to hurt and one else. When Ian drops the biggest surprise of all there seems to be another waiting around the corner. Will Miranda go home with out those she holds dear to her or will she be able to find a ally and stay close to those she just found?
I really enjoyed both these books. They seem to sum what Christmas is all about. Family is not always who is blood but those we choose and those we hold dear too. This book seemed to really hit its mark and there is always a certain amount of forgiveness that needs to be given when secrets that have long been buried make its way to the surface. I would highly recommend this set of books, this series would be perfect all year round and be the perfect, fun read.
